Graduates of the MAPP Program at Penn have published a new issue of the MAPP Magazine with articles about expectations of well-being during trying times, perspectives from Dr. Angela Duckworth on how the phrase “other people matter” is a key lesson of this past pandemic year, and the broad range of capstone topics chosen by the 2020 class of MAPP graduates.

The most recent edition of the MAPP Magazine is online. The mission of the MAPP Magazine is first to keep Penn MAPP alumni connected and second to share the wide range of our applications of positive psychology with a broader audience to inspire collaboration and growth in the field.   The latest articles include:

WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF HAPPINESS?

MAPP Magazine editor Dr. Irem Gunay (MAPP ’12) explores the shifting nature of well-being in trying times. She finds that high expectations about happiness during times of struggle can undermine well-being. In her view: “Happiness trumps meaning in good times, and meaning trumps happiness in difficult times.” Her research-packed essay also examines the search for meaning amidst struggle.

THE PURSUIT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S PERSPECTIVES:

One of the many benefits MAPP Alumni enjoy is the opportunity to have a private audience with our esteemed professors. In February, Dr. Angela Duckworth met with MAPP Alumni over Zoom and shared her personal learning journey during Covid.

Jessie Spurgeon (MAPP ’18) captures the talk and in doing so helps readers connect to Angela’s current thinking.

MAPP.15 CAPSTONE MONTAGE

The MAPP capstone is a significant rite of passage. This year, Jodi Wellman (MAPP ’20) gives us an inside look at the topics that resonate with the most recent class of MAPP graduates. While some are transforming their research into books, articles, and podcasts, all members of the class got something from their efforts this past summer.
