Hi, I’m Carin Rockind. Welcome to PPN Bites where we give you 60-second helpings of the positive psychology news you need to know. Truth be told, I’ve suffered anxiety a lot of my life, and worse, I get pretty self-critical about it. I get down on myself for having very normal feelings of grief or anxiety or stress or fear.
Research shows that when people get down on themselves and judge themselves harshly for very normal emotions they experience more day to day negativity. It’s long been understood that accepting yourself, accepting all of your emotions increases your well-being, but we didn’t understand until 2017 why. What these researchers found is that trait acceptance leads to decreased rumination. So, people who can accept all of themselves, who give themselves permission to be human, are non-judgemental about their whole selves, these people ruminate less. Of course, ruminating is going over and over the negative thoughts.
So for all of us who have been practicing self-criticism, it’s time that we accept acceptance. And that’s how we’re gonna live a happier life. Bye for now.
