As we start the second quarter of 2009, our optional theme for April is Motivation and Grit.
- How can people help other people maintain high levels of motivation?
- What kinds of motivation exist, and how do they relate to achievement?
- How do people use the ability to invest large amounts of effort?
- What is grit, and how does it affect well-being and achievement? How is it measured? How can people increase their grittiness?
- And related questions.
We’ve heard your interest in this topic through comments, such as here, here, here, and here, and we look forward to talking more in the comments and in the articles about Motivation and Grit concepts!
FYI, we expect that our May theme will be Stress and Resilience.
An optional theme is a topic that authors may or may not write about. It is a way of focusing some of the content while keeping other content surprising you. If you have suggestions for future optional themes you would like to see, please include these thoughts in the comments below! Thank you.

Senia, I would appreciate it if someone would explain how grit is different from the personality trait conscientiousness (and its facets).
Thanks, Wayne, that’s a great suggestion. Particular researchers in the area of conscientiousness that you recommend we focus on? Much thanks.
April is going to be a good month.
