Today, the Boston Globe reported that Positive Psychology will be introduced to McLean Hospital.  The article writes,

McLean is putting together a proposal to create an institute that will aim to teach healthcare providers and patients some of the more practical tenets of positive psychology, a mix of science and self-help that has been growing explosively in academia and building buzz in the media.

Carol Kauffman, who has been a clinical psychologist at McLean Hospital, will be the institute’s director.  The institute is expected to launch by the end of 2007.  The article reports that the institute will start off small, with a budget of $250,000, and staff including Kauffman as director, her cofounder Margaret Moore who runs a coaching company, a postdoctoral researcher, and some administrative staff, and the institute will seek additional investment.

Martin Seligman in today’s Letter to the Editor of the Globe disputes the statement of Julie Norem in the above article. Worth a read: Seligman letter here.

I laughed out loud when I read his rebuttal to Norem’s criticisms. May I present Teaching pessimisim: a class by Woody Allen.

LIFE SUX 101.

What would the syllabus look like?
Class 1: Don’t worry, you’re screwed.
Class 2: Why your dog hates you
Class 3: Frowning is better than no face at all. Just kidding it sucks, too.
Class 4: Signature Vices: how to get the least (from your worst)
Class 5: How to bitch about your job.
Class 6: Intro to Suicide How not to kill yourself: you’ll just mess it up anyway.
Class 7: Boo-Hoo. How to whine for what you want.
Class 8: How to work for a Jerk.
Class 9: Relax. Life is much worse than you think.
CAPSTONE PROJECT: A Waste of time ‘cuz when you die you rot. Deal with it.
